Geography is in vogue.
This year, the University of Panama’s Department of Geography celebrated it’s 80th year and we organized a series of events including conferences, workshops and of course the YouthMappers chapter at UP we were present and we contributed our knowledge.
We were exhibitors at the national and international Geography Congress held from October 28 to November 1. We discussed the work we and all YouthMappers chapter do worldwide, the power of maps, and how we, the youth, support global efforts and contribute to help save lives.
We also updated everyone on our activities in Panama. We talked about our most recent project that is about the community of the Kuna Nega that unfortunately live in polluted areas where there is garbage in the rivers, the air quality is not good, and this affects the community’s health. We also presented on our innovative Intelligent University project, including the detailed processes carried out to develop it and we shared the campus app with attendees.
In our chapter, there are members who are fashionable, which is why we wanted to show very beautiful projects carried out by our fellow chapter members. Among them: The turtle route in the community of Mata Oscura, Veraguas made by Ángel Ortega, Mundo Sculpturas by Francisco Olivella, and in commemoration of the 500 years of Panama City, Jean Guevara showed us a 3D scene of the tower of Panama Viejo and the route that Sir Henry Morgan took.
It was a week full of learning for all of us. We had the opportunity to host workshops on GIS applications such as survey123, story map, and arcgisPro for students but our work did not end there. On GISDay, we culminated with a presentation and a Mapathon focused on the Kuna Nega community and Geogrpahy major students participated and learned about OpenStreetMap.
But before being part of these activities I had the opportunity to visit the Maritime University of Panama (UMIP) with the new YouthMappersUP chapter president, Maritza Rodriguez, and we presented on our chapter and the network. Many students were interested in joining and fortunately, I had the opportunity to talk about the creation of a new chapter in the UMIP with a supportive faculty member, Professor Beatriz. In addition to UMIP, I’ve received requests from students in Veraguas, Panama who are interested in YouthMappers and I am currently coordinating a visit in 2020.
We all enjoyed the activities that took place in the UP and it was a great satisfaction for us to be part and share our knowledge with other people and we want everyone to know that Geography is in vogue.

La Geografía está de moda
Este año fue de mucha celebración en la Universidad de Panamá el departamento de Geografía cumplió 80 años donde se realizaron una serie de eventos entre ellas conferencias, talleres y participación de stand y por supuesto el capítulo youth mappers de la UP estuvimos presente aportando nuestros conocimientos.
Fuimos expositores en el congreso nacional e Internacional de geografía celebrado del 28 de octubre al 1 de noviembre dentro de los temas que expusimos fueron: La labor que realizamos los youth mappers a nivel mundial, el poder que tienen los mapas y como podemos ayudar a través de ellos de esta manera nos visualizamos como unos superhéroes al saber que nosotros como jóvenes podemos salvar vida.
No dejamos por fuera lo que está sucediendo en Panamá, hablamos de nuestro más reciente proyecto que se trata de la comunidad de Kuna Nega que vive entre la basura donde sus ríos y su calidad de aire no es bueno afectando la salud de las personas; temas innovadores como es nuestro proyecto universidad inteligente se menciono a detalle los procesos que se realizo para desarrollarlo y se mostro la app de nuestro campus.
En nuestro capitulo hay miembros que están a la moda es por eso que quisimos mostrar proyectos muy bonitos realizados por nuestros compañeros miembros del capítulo entre ellos: La ruta de la tortuga en la comunidad de Mata Oscura, Veraguas realizado por Ángel Ortega, Mundo Esculturas por Francisco Olivella y en conmemoración de los 500 años de la ciudad de Panamá Jean Guevara nos mostró escena en 3D de la torre de Panamá Viejo y la ruta que tomo el pirata Morgan. Fue una semana llena de mucho aprendizaje para todos tuvimos la oportunidad de dar talleres a los estudiantes sobre aplicaciones SIG como survey123, story map y arcgisPro pero nuestra labor no termino allí, nos esperaba el GISDAY donde culminamos con una presentación y un Mapathon en la comunidad de Kuna Nega estudiantes de la carrera de Geografía formaron parte de la actividad y conocieron sobre Open Street Map.
Pero antes de ser parte de las actividades tuve la oportunidad de visitar a la Universidad Marítima de Panamá (UMIP) junto a mi compañera Maritza Rodriguez mostramos todo sobre los Youth Mappers muchos estudiantes estuvieron interesados y afortunadamente la profesora Beatriz estaba muy cerca donde tuve la oportunidad de conversarle sobre la creación de un nuevo capitulo en la UMIP al igual que la Joven Daniela quien nos escribió muy emocionada esperando que los Youth Mappers lleguen a Veraguas manteniendo el contacto con ella y el profesor Jaime estamos en coordinación de las visita para el próximo año y arrancar el 2020 exitosamente.
Todos disfrutamos de las actividades que se desarrollaron en la UP y fue de gran satisfacción para nosotros ser parte y compartir nuestros conocimientos con demás personas y queremos que otros chicos conozcan que la Geografía está de moda.
