About

Welcome to Introduction to GeoAI. This course is designed for university students with a background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) who want to understand how artificial intelligence is transforming geospatial practice. No prior machine learning experience is required—but a willingness to think carefully about both the power and the limits of these tools is essential. Over the course of these five sections, you will build both conceptual literacy and practical skills. You will learn what GeoAI is and where it came from, how AI 'sees' geographic data, where and why these systems fail, how to use AI-assisted mapping tools, and how to evaluate the ethical implications of deploying them.

This course was developed by Elodie Nix (2026) with support from Dr. Ebenezer Boateng and Dr. Patricia Solís. This course is developed in partnership with Cyber2A — a National Science Foundation-funded initiative that trains Arctic researchers to apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to geospatial science challenges.
