Mapping the Future: Leading YouthMappers in Honduras

Un cálido saludo a toda la comunidad de YouthMappers y de OpenStreetMap.

Mi nombre es Isabel Alejandra Fuentes Núñez, y este 2025 estoy culminando mi Licenciatura en Ciencia y Tecnología de la Información Geográfica en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH).

Quiero compartir con ustedes una experiencia que ha marcado profundamente mi trayectoria académica y personal: la activación del primer capítulo oficial de YouthMappers en Honduras.

Tuve el honor de liderar la creación del capítulo de YouthMappers en mi país, convirtiéndome en la primera mujer en asumir esta responsabilidad.

Ya en años anteriores se había intentado abrir un capítulo dentro de la carrera, pero nunca se concretó ningún proyecto.

Fue en 2024, gracias al valioso apoyo de Maya Lovo, ex embajadora regional del voluntariado, que logramos darle vida a esta iniciativa.

Su visita a Honduras fue clave para introducirnos en el mundo de OpenStreetMap (OSM) y comenzar a construir una comunidad mapera en Honduras.

Nuestro primer proyecto, enfocado en la señalización de Ciudad Universitaria, fue una experiencia transformadora. Este esfuerzo está documentado en el blog oficial de YouthMappers: Mapeo para señalización de Ciudad Universitaria.

Como líder del capítulo, asumí el reto de dar a conocer el proyecto dentro de la UNAH y en otros centros universitarios, posicionar a Honduras en el mapa de la comunidad global de mapeo, fomentar la investigación con datos abiertos y fortalecer el voluntariado geoespacial en el país. También trabajé en establecer vínculos institucionales que permitan desarrollar futuros proyectos para estudiantes interesados en la cartografía colaborativa.

Una de las experiencias más enriquecedoras fue colaborar con la Dirección de Cultura de la UNAH en el proyecto de Gestión Ambiental del Agua en Quebrada Onda, Lepaterique. Junto a la arquitecta Sarahi Zamora, desarrollamos una propuesta que tuve el privilegio de presentar en el Estado del Arte de los Mapas Latinoamericanos 2025, celebrado en Medellín, Colombia.

Esta participación me convirtió en la primera hondureña en representar al país en este importante evento regional.

Asimismo, expreso mi profundo agradecimiento a la señora Patricia Solís por su incansable labor en involucrar a la juventud en temas de datos abiertos y cartografía. Tuve la oportunidad de conocerla durante la 26ª Asamblea del Instituto Panamericano de Geografía e Historia (IPGH), lo cual fue una experiencia inspiradora que reafirmó mi compromiso con esta causa.

A warm greeting to the entire YouthMappers and OpenStreetMap community.

My name is Isabel Alejandra Fuentes Núñez, and this year, 2025, I am completing my Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Science and Technology at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH).

I want to share with you an experience that has profoundly marked my academic and personal background: the activation of the first official YouthMappers chapter in Honduras.

I had the honor of leading the creation of the YouthMappers chapter in my country, becoming the first woman to assume this responsibility.

In previous years, there had been attempts to open a chapter within the program, but no project was ever completed.

It was in 2024, thanks to the valuable support of Maya Lovo, former Regional Ambassador of Volunteering, that we managed to bring this initiative to life. Her visit to Honduras was key to introducing us to the world of OpenStreetMap (OSM) and to beginning the construction of a map-making community in Honduras.

Our first project, focused on signage for University City, was a transformative experience. This effort is documented on the official blog of YouthMappers: Mapping for Signage of University City.

As chapter leader, I took on the challenge of raising awareness of the project within UNAH and in other university centers, positioning Honduras on the map of the global community of mapping, promoting open data research, and strengthening geospatial volunteering in the country. I also worked on establishing institutional links that would allow for the development of future projects for students interested in collaborative mapping.

One of the most enriching experiences was collaborating with the Directorate of Culture of UNAH in the Environmental Water Management project in Quebrada Onda, Lepaterique. Together with architect Sarahi Zamora, we developed a proposal that I had the privilege of presenting at the State of the Art of Latin American Maps 2025, held in Medellín, Colombia.

This participation made me the first Honduran to represent the country in this important regional event.

I worked to involve young people in open data and mapping. I had the opportunity to meet her during the 26th Assembly of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (IPGH), which was an inspiring experience that reaffirmed my commitment to this cause.
