Where We power the future
background
The world needs clean energy — but many countries don’t even know where their electricity grids are. Incomplete or inaccessible grid data slows down renewable energy projects, makes planning expensive, and leaves communities without reliable power. Open, accurate grid data is the first step toward building an energy system that’s fair, reliable, and low-carbon.
That’s why YouthMappers is partnering with MapYourGrid to map electrical grids around the world. Using OpenStreetMap, volunteers trace power lines, towers, and substations, creating an open, verifiable map that governments, utilities, and communities can trust. MapYourGrid aims to expand global grid coverage in OSM from 70% to 98% by 2028, helping accelerate clean energy deployment and rural electrification.

Tune in to the training webinar hosted in collaboration with MapYourGrid to learn about the organization and how to map power lines.
Review theStarter Kit and visit he Good First Lines page to explore and select power lines.
Once you have selected your line, start mapping in iDEditor. Save changes with the following hashtags: #YouthPower #YouthMappers #YouthMappers10.
Every line you trace helps make energy systems more visible, fair, and ready for a clean energy future.

WHy we're mapping
When YouthMappers map power lines, towers, or substations, it’s more than just drawing lines on a map. You’re:
-
Helping renewable energy reach the right places
-
Identifying off-grid communities so they can get electricity
-
Reducing planning costs for utilities and governments
-
Building trust and transparency through open data
Connecting to the SDGs
Every line you map contributes directly to global goals:
