Connecting communities through the use of OSM in our classrooms.

TeachOSM es un programa de OpenStreetMap Estados Unidos, que trabaja junto con maestros y profesores para implementar el uso de OSM en las clases. Dentro de las actividades que realizan se encuentran los Map-Alongs, dos veces al mes, así como generar herramientas de apoyos para el uso de los datos abiertos.
Desde el 22 de octubre de 2021 hasta el 27 de febrero de 2022, a través del programa de pasantías de EverywhereSheMaps, trabajé con TeachOSM como pasante de comunicaciones y outreach. Mis roles consistieron en compartir en las redes sociales las actividades que se llevaban a cabo, encontrar usos de OSM en las escuelas y universidades, para compartirlos, crear documentos para ayudar a quienes desean comenzar a ocupar esta herramienta y realizar entrevistas a diferentes personas para que compartieran su conocimiento y recomendaciones con la red.
¿Por qué recomiendo esta experiencia?
Previo a mi incorporación a YouthMappers, existían muchas preguntas sobre cómo podría aplicar mis conocimientos. El organizarme con compañeros de la universidad y trabajar con proyectos relacionados a nuestra licenciatura, me permitió ver las posibilidades técnicas, teóricas y metodológicas que ofrece mi carrera.
Una vez nos unimos a la red, las oportunidades no pararon de aparecer. Desde trabajar con la universidad, comunidades e individuos, hasta, de forma individual, participar en programas como EverywhereSheMaps. A pesar de estar comenzando mi carrera en las áreas geoespaciales, la baja participación femenina y de la diversidad es clara. Esto no significa algo únicamente a nivel simbólico, por no encontrarnos en estos espacios, sino también a nivel de conocimiento técnico y experiencia entre las mujeres y las diversidades. Por lo que, al enterarme que existía una convocatoria que buscaba incluir a más personas en estos espacios, decidí aplicar.
Nuevo conocimiento que se comparte.
La pasantía, en primer lugar, me permitió involucrarme en espacios profesionales. Dentro de las reuniones pude aprender del conocimiento avanzado de quienes me guiaron en todo el proceso. Dentro de este conocimiento se encuentra aprender a crear proyectos en el Tasking Manager, una tarea importante para alguien que llevaba cuatro meses ocupando OpenStreetMap al momento de comenzar.
Sumado a esto, como parte de las actividades desarrolladas durante los cuatro meses, logré conectar con personas de diferentes países y conocimientos, para mostrar sus experiencias en los Blogs de TeachOSM. A partir de estas interacciones me fue posible aprender sobre cómo se ha ocupado OSM y otras plataformas de mapeo libre y los resultados que han tenido. Desde la creación de cursos abiertos para aprender a hacer análisis espacial, hasta la creación de grupos estudiantiles en el bachillerato.
Finalmente, este conocimiento no acabó conmigo. Parte de los objetivos que perseguí con esa actividad, como con las oportunidades que se van presentando, es compartir lo que se me transfirió con quienes me rodean. Como parte de esta transferencia, cadena, de conocimientos, en las actividades de mi capítulo les enseñé sobre OSMCha, para medir las contribuciones de nuestros proyectos.
Por esta y muchas otras razones que pueden resonar con las personas interesadas, comparto mi experiencia. Espero que a partir de este blog, más personas puedan participar en las pasantías de EverywhereSheMaps y sientan un crecimiento personal y colectivo.
Connecting Communities Through the Use of OSM in Our Classrooms
TeachOSM is a program of OpenStreetMap United States, working together with teachers and professors to implement the use of OSM in the classroom. Among the activities, they carry out are the Map-Alongs, twice a month, as well as generating support tools for the use of open data.
From October 22, 2021, to February 27, 2022, through the Everywhere She Maps internship match program, I worked with TeachOSM as a communications and outreach intern. My roles consisted of sharing the activities that were carried out on social networks, finding uses for OSM in schools and universities to share them, creating documents to help those who want to start using this tool, and conducting interviews with different people to share their knowledge and recommendations with the network.
Why do I recommend this experience?
Prior to joining YouthMappers, there were many questions about how I could apply my knowledge. Organizing myself with university colleagues and working on projects related to our degree allowed me to see the technical, theoretical, and methodological possibilities that my career offers.
Once I joined the network, the opportunities did not stop appearing. From working with the university, communities, and individuals, to participating in programs like Everywhere She Maps. Despite starting my career in geospatial areas, the low participation of women and diversity was clear. This does not mean something only at a symbolic level because we do not have access to these spaces, but also at the level of technical knowledge and experience among women and diversities. Therefore, when I found out that there was a call that sought to include more people in these places, I decided to apply.
New knowledge is shared.
The internship, first, allowed me to get involved in professional spaces. Within the meetings, I learned from the advanced knowledge of those who guided me throughout the process. For example, learning to create projects in the Tasking Manager, is an important task for someone who had been using OpenStreetMap for four months at the time of starting.
In addition to this, as part of the activities carried out during the four months, I was able to connect with people from different countries and backgrounds, to show their experiences on the TeachOSM Blogs. From these interactions I was able to learn about how OSM and other free mapping platforms have been used in other countries and the results, they’ve had. From the creation of open courses to learning to do spatial analysis, to the creation of student groups in high school.
Finally, this knowledge did not end with me. Part of the objectives that I pursued with this activity, as with the opportunities that arise, is to share what was transferred to me with those around me. As part of this transfer, chain, of knowledge, in the activities of my chapter, I taught them about OSMCha, to measure the contributions of our projects.
For this and many other reasons that may resonate with interested people, I share my experience. I hope that from this blog, more people can participate in the Everywhere She Maps internship match program and feel personal and collective growth.
