From Challenges to Triumph: A Personal Mapping Journey

My journey with YouthMappers began in 2022, fueled by enthusiasm but hampered by technological constraints. My initial laptop barely functioned, and when it finally gave out, my phone followed suit. However, these setbacks did not deter my commitment. I borrowed laptops from friends, participated in online training sessions, and gradually honed my skills, particularly in JOSM (Java OpenStreetMap Editor).

As the Media and Publicity Director for my chapter, I channeled my creativity into designing flyers and promotional materials. This role allowed me to contribute meaningfully, even when technical resources were scarce. I also served as a trainer for my YouthMappers chapter, where I introduced my colleagues and juniors to the use of mapping editors and geospatial tools.
My chapter, UCC YouthMappers, organized an inter-university mapathon. As a participant and member of UCC YouthMappers, I had the privilege of being part of this transformative experience. This mapathon was a testament to perseverance. Despite not having my own device, I secured a borrowed laptop to participate.

My patron, Dr. Julia Quaicoe, often emphasized that it's the commitment and devotion of an individual to the activities of YouthMappers that yield benefits and growth of the person as an individual and the chapter as a whole, and I strived to embody this principle throughout the event.Â
While I didn't win the mapathon, my dedication over the years did not go unnoticed. In a surprising and heartwarming turn of events, I was awarded a laptop funded by TomTom as one of the top contributors from my chapter. This gesture was more than just a prize; it was a recognition of my journey and a tool to fuel my future contributions.

This award represents a significant boost to my capabilities. It’s not just a device; it’s a promise to myself and the mapping community. I am now more committed than ever to contributing high-quality edits and frequent updates to OpenStreetMap. Understanding the crucial role of accurate and reliable mapping data, I pledge to uphold the highest standards in my work. The mapathon was an inspiring experience that has only intensified my passion for mapping. The support from TomTom and OpenStreetMap Ghana has been invaluable, not just in terms of the hardware provided but also in the encouragement and recognition of emerging talent in the field.
Looking ahead, I am excited about the possibilities this new laptop opens up. I eagerly anticipate participating in future mapathons and community initiatives, leveraging this laptop to its fullest potential. This experience has reinforced my belief in the power of community, perseverance, and the impact of digital mapping in shaping our understanding of the world.
My experience has taught me valuable lessons that I would like to share with other YouthMappers, especially those facing similar challenges:
Don’t let technological limitations discourage you. If you are passionate about mapping, find creative ways to participate, even if it means borrowing equipment or using shared resources.
Embrace learning opportunities. Take advantage of every training session, webinar, and workshop available. The skills you gain will be invaluable, regardless of your current resources.
Contribute in any way you can. If you can’t always map, find other ways to contribute. Whether it’s through social media management, event planning, or mentoring newer members, every role is crucial to the success of your chapter.
Build a supportive network. Connect with fellow mappers, both within your chapter and across the YouthMappers community. These relationships can provide support, inspiration, and sometimes even practical help.
Focus on making accurate and meaningful contributions. Even if they’re small, consistent, high-quality work will always be recognized and valued.
Remember your purpose. Reflect on why you joined YouthMappers in the first place. The impact of your work extends far beyond the maps you create, contributing to real-world decision-making and development.

To all YouthMappers out there, remember that every edit, every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference. Your dedication to mapping is helping to create a more accurately mapped world, which in turn supports better decision-making and development across the globe. Keep mapping, keep learning, and keep pushing forward; your efforts are truly shaping the future.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Dr. Julia Quaicoe, the UCC YouthMappers' patron, for her tremendous support and encouragement. I'm also grateful to Mr. Stephen Donkor from OpenStreetMap Ghana for recognizing my contributions to OpenStreetMap and providing valuable support. Special thanks to Ms. Hajar Quofi from TomTom, who offered exceptional guidance during the mapping challenge and shared important mapping techniques that greatly enhanced our skills.
