A week-long celebration of #osmgeoweek at the University of Port Harcourt

In celebration of the OpenStreetMap GeoWeek, The UniqueMappers Team of the University of Port Harcourt held a week-long event which ran from  12th - 18th November 2017.

The event commenced on Sunday November 12, 2017 with the mapping of worship centers using Maps.Me mobile app. Participants used Maps.me to map the location of their churches.

On Monday November 13th, an awareness campaign was carried out to enlighten people on the activities of YouthMappers and the UniqueMappers team at the University of Port Harcourt. The aim was to educate students on the importance of mapping, especially those outside of the discipline of geography. After this, a leadership training was held for team leaders of affiliate  YouthMappers chapters established by UniqueMappersTeam in other campuses. The LionMappers of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were present for the training.

The next day, Tuesday November 14th, a Mapathon (a mapping training session) was held at the basic unit. Participants were trained on how to map online using the OpenStreetMap platform and new members were registered into the team. After registration, they joined other members in mapping Uniport campuses (Abuja, Delta and Choba campuses) as well as the mapping task created to map Alakahia Community and students’ lodges. Some participated in the Catchathon (stall catchers i.e. mapping the brain.). After the above activities and light refreshments, the team went to Abuja park and the various hostels to invite people for the Mapathon and Catchathon on Wednesday Nov. 15th.

During Wednesday's mapathon, the task was to map neighboring communities of the University, including Alakahia, Aluu and Choba. Some members also participated in the Catchathon. This was held at the Information Communication and Technology Center (ICTC), café 1.

On Thursday November 16, 2017 the Mapathon and Catchathon continued. Remarkable progress was made on the tasks. The team inauguration was scheduled for Friday, but due to the absence of some pioneering executives who are presently undergoing industrial training in different states of the country; it had to be scheduled for a later date.

The geography awareness week celebration was no doubt a success. The team was able to complete a map of an appreciable extent of the university campus, and also contribute remarkably to world geospatial database. As a result of the teams' efforts, an online map of the university can be found using the Maps.me mobile app which can be downloaded from the Google play store.

Arrival of UniqueMappersTeam certificate of Affiliation to YouthMappers

Finally, the team also celebrated the week with excitement at the arrival of the certificate of affiliation certifying officially that UniqueMappsTeam is an affiliate chapter of YouthMappers Network. The Parcel included a YouthMappers banner, pins, stickers, and balloons. We are  now listed on YouthMappers website as one of the 90 campus chapters in 27 countries mapping our local environment and building resilient communities on the world map of OpenStreetMap.
