The analysis, modeling and visualization of geospatial information allows us to better understand our environment, and its scope. And the interdisciplinary importance of geospatial information has made its use extended globally and in different sectors of society. Efforts are constantly being added to create and improve the methodologies, processes and tools that solve questions and problems that we face as humanity. YouthMappers through research and project management, using geospatial information and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) promotes and encourages youth leadership to solve problems around the Sustainable Development Goals.
My name is Maria Fernanda Peña Valencia, biologist, Colombian, YouthMappers regional ambassador in my country and in Latin America and fascinated by everything that can be done with geospatial data and the new technologies. Since 2017 I have been part of YouthMappers and every day I am more surprised at everything that each of the mappers who are part of this organization do. Regardless of profession, nationality and even age, there is a place for all those who seek to contribute to the solution of problems faced by communities around the world. Therefore, it is a great privilege for me to be able to help extend this network in my country and region.

An activity I carried out in my second semester of 2019 as an ambassador, was my participation in the State of the Map Latam held in Encarnación, Paraguay. The slogan of the event was: "what world your maps reveal?" So, I had the opportunity to show how from YouthMappers in Colombia we work on projects that allow not only the resilience of communities, but also the conservation of the great biodiversity of our country, and all through humanitarian and collaborative mapping. Additionally, I was able to meet amazing people, from amazing countries, doing amazing things through OpenStreetMap.
On the other hand, from the YouthMappers chapter GeoLab UdeA, chapter to which I am a part (curious fact: at this moment our chapter is mainly composed of women) we organized the celebration of GIS Day at our university. We extended the invitation to different institutions and organizations outside the university community and received a positive response. I was a speaker in one of the talks of the event, in which I talked about YouthMappers and everything that is done and can be done in the organization. While thinking about the title of the talk, I remembered with gratitude not only that my life has changed since I started being a YouthMapper, but also everything that with my 'grain of sand' in this global network I have contributed to positive changes in society.
Finally, the talk was titled YouthMappers a great ally. Because, when you are part of this organization you grow and learn personally and professionally, not only because you work with geospatial information to solve problems and research questions; but also because you can work hand in hand with people from anywhere in the world, know their contexts and learn and contribute in solving their problems. So, I conclude again that the world is a handkerchief and with YouthMappers you can make it a very nice one. I'd like to extend an invitation and encourage you to be part of this network.
YouthMappers un Gran Aliado
El análisis, modelamiento y visualización de información geoespacial nos permite comprender mejor nuestro entorno, y su alcance e interdisciplinariedad han hecho que su uso se extienda a nivel mundial y en diferentes sectores de la sociedad. Constantemente se suman esfuerzos para crear y mejorar las metodologías, procesos y herramientas que permitan resolver las preguntas y los problemas que enfrentamos como humanidad. YouthMappers a través de la investigación y la gestión de proyectos utilizando información geoespacial y Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG), promueve y alienta el liderazgo juvenil para resolver problemas en torno a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.
Mi nombre es Maria Fernanda Peña Valencia, bióloga, colombiana, embajadora regional de YouthMappers en mi país y en América Latina y fascinada por todo lo que se puede hacer con un par de datos geoespacializados y las nuevas tecnologías. Desde 2017 formo parte de YouthMappers y cada día me sorprende más todo lo que hacen cada uno de los mapeadores que forman parte de esta organización. Independientemente de la profesión, la nacionalidad e incluso la edad, hay un lugar para todos aquellos que buscan contribuir a la solución de los problemas que enfrentan las comunidades alrededor del mundo. Por lo tanto, es un gran privilegio para mí poder ayudar a extender esta red en mi país y región.
Durante las actividades llevadas a cabo en el semestre pasado como embajadora, pude participar en el State of the Map Latam, realizado en Encarnación, Paraguay entre el 14 y 16 de noviembre; hermosa ciudad cabe resaltar. El lema del evento fue: ¿Qué mundo revelan tus mapas? y tuve la oportunidad de presentar cómo desde YouthMappers en Colombia trabajamos en proyectos que no solo contribuyen a la resiliencia de comunidades frente a diferentes problemáticas, sino también la conservación de la gran biodiversidad de nuestro país, y todo a través del mapeo humanitario y colaborativo. Además, pude conocer personas maravillosas, de diferentes países de habla española, haciendo cosas increíbles a través de OpenStreetMap.
Por otro lado, desde el capítulo de YouthMappers GeoLab UdeA, capítulo del que soy parte (dato curioso: en este momento nuestro capítulo está compuesto principalmente por mujeres) organizamos la celebración del GISDay en la Universidad de Antioquia. Extendimos la invitación a diferentes instituciones y organizaciones fuera de la comunidad universitaria y recibimos una respuesta positiva. Llevé a cabo una de las charlas del evento, en la que hablé sobre YouthMappers y todo lo que se hace y se puede hacer en la organización. Mientras pensaba en el título de la charla, recordé con gratitud no solo todo lo que mi vida ha cambiado desde que comencé a ser una youthmapper, sino también todo lo que con mi grano de arena en esta red global he contribuido a cambios positivos en la sociedad.
Finalmente, la charla se tituló YouthMappers un gran aliado. Porque cuando eres parte de esta organización, creces y aprendes personal y profesionalmente, no solo porque trabajas constantemente con información geoespacial para resolver problemas y preguntas de investigación, sino también porque puedes trabajar de la mano con personas de cualquier parte del mundo, conocer sus contextos, y aprender y contribuir a resolver las problemáticas que les rodean. Ser parte de la organización facilita estar actualizado en las metodologías y herramientas alrededor de los geodatos, y hace que se amplíe la visión del mundo que nos rodea. Por tanto, concluyo nuevamente que este mundo es un pañuelo y con YouthMappers puedes ayudar a hacerlo muy bonito. La invitación está hecha, te animo a ser parte de esta red.
